top summer activities: win a $100 visa card

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kelloggs.

this summer was the summer of staying home and not really going to far to have fun.
normally we go to san diego for a few weeks but with all the travel i and jake did right before summer we decided it would be best to save that till later on this year.
so here's my top 5 favorite summer activities:
5. reading time at the library. we have the cutest librarian who works extra hard in the summer time to make reading in the summer fun. the summer program ended with a magician. i had a blast. pretty sure my kids did too, but i was to enthralled and kept wondering how the heck he did it to care pay attention to see if my kids had fun.
4. family coming from california to visit us here in the middle of nowhere. no matter what it's hilarious to watch all your family that is used to living in sea level, come up to 7000+ feet above sea level. they kind of act a little drunk... or hard core smokers who run out of air fast. which kind of makes me think...i probably should look at running a 5 k in california, i'll probably kick some A!
3. swimming at grandma and grandpa's in the big city. cousins, cookouts, and no schedule...nuff said.
2. hiking and camping and spending time with the family. finally being able to say we had a successful camping and hiking experience!
1. and the #1 best summer activity this summer.
going to the pool every single freakin day. this summer i watched my 6 and almost 4 year old who neither would go into the water at the beginning of june...to having my almost 4 year old able to swim and float for hours with her floaties, and a 6 year old that learned how to swim, and get this jump off the high dive.
i got to talk to friends every day, and i got a rockin tan. best one i've had in years. not only that but i managed to jump off the high dive and managed to get the whole dang pool up my nose and into my brain. well okay maybe not the whole pool...but at least half.

the breakfast squeeze: win $100 visa card

okay so i have to admit.
i eat breakfast.
every morning.
and because it's the school year already over here, we try to eat a well-balanced breakfast every single morning.
yes, it's hard but we do it.

every once in a while my walk goes over in time in the morning (most likely because i'm dragging) and i start the morning routine a few minutes behind schedule...and because i am who i am, i most likely will choose a breakfast that takes a little longer than normal case in point: waffles in the waffle iron. not because i mean to but just because i do stupid things like that sometimes. we have to get scriptures in there and we have to make sure boys are properly groomed...so yeah sometimes i don't get to sit down in time before we have to get a move on to the next thing.

those days i normally eat a yogurt (and a diet coke!) and i throw a handful of granola for the extra calories and to tie me over till i can get something a little more "meaty" something or other for lunch.

now it's your turn.

sooooo we have a little girl who had some issues with pooping.

and we tried ev.ery.thing.
don't believe me? read this post.

yes yes...she regressed after that post and went to holding her poops AGAIN. and i went back to being my eye twitching anxious self and started with the begging and the singing, and the cheers of "push it out push it out....WAAAAAAAY OUT", promises of dollies and pink bicycles were made all in the name of having this little girl "release the hounds" if you will.

you know what ended up being the cure?
are you ready for this?

a little bit of mineral oil in her juice every night before she would brush her teeth and get in bed...
and for breakfast a bowl of kelloggs frosted mini wheats.
nope not even kidding.

i got her on that and then i got the boys and myself and the husband on that cereal at least a few times a week...

and that my friends is the the honest to goodness truth and why i have to say that at our house the favorite cereal of choice is kelloggs frosted mini wheats.
it makes for happy colons here and everyone is regular and my eye isn't twitching anymore.

now do you want a $100 visa card brought to you by kelloggs and blogher?

a few years wiser

This is a compensated review by BlogHer and Juicy Juice.

as a young mom i had a big head and i just knew i was going to do things COMPLETELY different from what my mom did.
my mom is UBER healthy.
growing up i wanting so desperately to drink soda and eat fast food, i also remember thinking "so help me if i see another veggie burger or soy milk box i am going to scream!" i remember going to other people's homes and wanting to gorge myself on anything that was not allowed in my home.
so... i vowed (before i had kids) that i would let my children have soda and junk food. yes sir-ee i was going to let it be in our home if they wanted it.

oh boy.
then i had kids.

fast forward 10 and a half years of thrown in the game of motherhood and a little more of a deflated head.

uh kids need to be guided in what they eat.
duh.
mom was right. well to a degree.

see i've learned that going extreme in either direction will sort of cause issues. and power struggles.

so i've tried to adapt.

i do not buy junk food to sit in my home.
i do not buy sugar filled soda to sit in my home.
because if it's there it will be devoured.

i try to have an array of fruits in our home, and we grow our veggies in our own garden. but i do buy pizza once a week as well and we go to the store to go get ourselves a treat for a good's days work.

i'm trying to be more balanced so my kids don't feel the need to gorge themselves on junk when they get the chance, but also to have balance so i do create somewhat healthy individuals.

something i won't budge on is the sugar filled soda in my house. nope. uh-uh.

so when i was asked if i would like to participate and try out some products by juicy juice (the all natural sparkling apple drink, and the all natural 100% juice boxes) i thought i'd give it a shot.

i was pleasantly surprised when it arrived in my home and read the back of the label "all natural, no artificial ingredients, excellent source of vitamin C" and last but not least "NO ADDED SUGAR".
well alrighty then.

i handed it out to the kids. would they like it?

"MOM!!!! you got us soda?!!!!" explained the 10 year old as he took a swig of the sparkling drink with huge eyes. (and looking around to the other kids in a "mom finally broke!!!" look)

"nope. this stuff isn't like the other stuff. this is okay to drink in our house."

well juicy juice sent us a whole box of each of them. and within the first day i had to lay down some ground rules. because even too much of a good thing can be bad for us. can you say case load of drinks drunk in a day and tummy aches to be had later on? :)

i look at it as a win win situation this sparkling apple stuff and i.

kids enjoy it and think it's just as cool as soda...and i KNOW that it's way better than soda.

see mom, i'm not killing your grand kids like you thought i would! ;)
oh and have i told you lately how sorry i am for all the stupid things i did and said as a kid to you?
yeah i'm learning first hand...and i'm reeeeeeally sorry.
you were right when you said "just wait till you have some of your own."
nicely played mom nicely played.

now here's an awesome thing that blogher and juicy juice are doing for my readers!

summer fun: win a $100 visa card

as we are quickly approaching summer's end i keep thinking...what should we stuff in before school begins.
well living in a small town our extra curricular activities are kind of limited. i mean we can go to the pool which we already have been doing every.single.day. we've only missed one or two days here and there because of the down pour plus thunder and lightning.

or we could do some more camping.
this was our summer to try out camping again.
we even got a pop up camper...oh but i'm getting ahead of myself...you need some background stories to lead up to this point...

have i mentioned that we have had nothing but really bad luck with camping?
no? hmmm? yeah.

lets just say this. the last two times we attempted big camping trips in the 12 and a half years of our marriage, have gone down in history as the worst ever experiences, and down right make you not want to talk to each other after the whole thing kind of deal.

lets start with the first time we attempted camping...go back in time if you will:

we are newly married of a year or maybe it was less? don't know it doesn't matter. we decide to go with two other couples to camp at a close to the beach location on memorial weekend. yeah well, we were young and inexperienced so we didn't reserve any location and basically ended up finding our own remote area where i'm pretty sure no one else had been before. we had to clear sage brush and a couple of cow patties to put down our tent. yup, remote.

did i forget to mention i had just found out a few weeks earlier that i was pregnant with our first son? yeah, did i also forget to mention that i was finding out real quick what morning sickness was that week? also did i forget to mention that i've since that first time of getting morning sickness had three more pregnancies that had put me in the hospital at least once for dehydration (each time) and since then decided its stupid to call something that makes you sick and throw up 20+ times a day at any time of the day or night "morning sickness"? yeah. basically i was feeling like crap, and it just got worse with the heat and the hiking of that day.

as the day went on we realized we had put up our tent in the thick of tick infested sage brushes. and every time our beige dog would accidentally hit a sage brush she would walk away looking like a dalmatian from all the ticks on her.
the next morning one of husbands woke up to a tick attached to his face right in between his eyes.

we packed up and left.

fast forward like 7 years later.

the husband had just found out he was going to be deployed for a year. we wanted to have a family vacation before everything would spin out of control with getting ready to send him over seas and not to mention filling the last requirements of hours and paperwork to graduate with his PhD.
we decided to go to lake powell seeing that it was only 2 hours away from our house.
we packed up our newly bought tent, (because we'd not tried to camp since that last time) and we got into the truck and drove off. only to blow out a tire. i mean that thing exploded and ruined the passenger side door on the husband's truck.

i vowed it to be a bad sign and wanted to turn around. the husband said he had an extra spare tire and we should press on.
we did just that.

it was a super busy weekend for lake powell...um which summer weekend is it not? anywho all was well minus the tire incident by this point. and then we decided to roast marshmallows over our little propane grill (there was a no fires allowed policy at the time...probably still is?) anyways. we started to get everything ready and the kids were pretty excited. we had lit up our lantern and the husband was trying to get the mini propane tank screwed onto the grill...well the propane tank started hissing out propane the minute the husband tried to screw it on the grill, and as the propane was spewing out it kept freezing or burning the husband's hand so he couldn't get it to stop, he jerked one way and the propane gas hit our lit lantern which caused a propane explosion. my oldest son was right in the explosion's way.
he put up his hand just in time to protect his face.
jake was able to put out the fire by grabbing the grill and throwing it into the lake.

my oldest son miraculously walked away with singed hair and a lot of burning on his right hand. nothing on his face.

we tried to nurse oldest son's hand as best as we could. but by midnight it was apparent that he had gotten badly burnt. it was blistering and oozing. so we started to pack up our camp.
our second attempt at camping and we didn't even make it through the night.
turns out we got a faulty propane tank. that was slightly stripped where you needed to screw it in to the grill. i could of sued but whatever, my kid was sort of okay and was put on antibiotics, and bandaged up for a while.

fast forward 4 years.
this summer i uttered the words "maybe we should try camping again."
the husband snorted and said "we don't do camping."
i said "yeah but this time i'm not pregnant and we aren't going to bring a faulty propane tank. the kids keep asking to do it. and anyways there are a ton of place to do it around here, we don't even need to leave town really." that was the beginning of the season. by mid season we had found a killer deal on a small pop up camper.

so we gave it a shot.
the view from our camper

we camped 10 miles away, with a convenience store only 2 and half miles down from the camp ground. my kids kept telling everyone who would listen "we're going to try camping again, but we're only going to wet our feet this time by going one night and leaving in the morning." (seriously they were parrots word for word they told everyone what we had just the night before.) the kids were excited, i was nervous, and jake was skeptical.

we had dinner, hiked, did smores, had hot chocolate, spit sunflower seeds, and went to bed all within a 4 hour spread.

at around 1 am i kept seeing a green flashing light coming from under my side of the camper...so i bent down quickly to see what it was only to not realize there was a counter there. i slammed my head so hard and so quick that i literally saw my whole world light up. "what in the...what did you just do?" the husband hissed.
i told him to touch my head where i had just slammed it and we both agreed it was a super nasty goose egg of a bump... one that could of been mistaken for bone sticking out. all he said was"of course" and i started giggling like a stupid fool. he started to laugh.
i went to bed with a bad headache.

that morning we woke up and the kids were so happy we had made it through the night. we had breakfast, spit a few sunflower seeds, and then packed it up to make it home in about 20 minutes...
and that my friends was our first official good camping experience as a family.

... i'm hooked. i loved it. the kids had a blast, and jake walked away a little less skeptical. we've been planning our next big camping trip that will be probably 15 to 20 miles away and we might extend it to two full days.

but this time i'll make sure to lay my head on the other side of the camper, and not on the side that will give me a giant goose egg.

morning routines: win a $100 visa card

giveaway now closed

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kelloggs.

so i've mentioned here and there that this summer we have been following a set routine. granted i don't have full blown teenagers that seem to require a lot more sleep then well...anyone it seems! and we don't have school just yet to make our mornings jump start with an alarm...no, this summer we've been naturally getting up around 7:30 to 8 am. it's been blissful.

BUT after we have our cereal, the kids know that we are to do our morning jobs...
i'm sort of a scheduled kind of gal who likes routines.
i've made it so my house runs that way as well.
i had to adjust it and be more strict about this "morning routine" when blogging became more of a job and started taking some of my free/household routine time.

here's the deal, i follow one rule for sure:
no electronics (except tv for a few morning cartoons while eating breakfast, and checking of i-touch for any emergency emails...never has happened yet) may be started up and nothing may be worked/played on till everything else on the following list is completed (usually around 10 am in the summers)

here's our morning routine:
*kids up eat cereal.
*dishwasher, is unloaded from the night before while kids finish breakfast.
*dishwasher can then be loaded with breakfast bowls, and can continue to be filled throughout the day as needed.
*beds are made and rooms are tidied up (but really they don't need it cause we pick up before going to bed.) mainly dirty laundry: pj's, undies, and socks or bedding that needs washing is taken to the laundry room.
*next each person in our family (minus dad because he's at work) is to participate (as well as they can due to age!) in our daily household chore.

ours goes as follows:
Monday-fold laundry- kids are all responsible to fold their own clothes and put them away in their drawers) yes even the 6 year old and 4 year old. they do a horrible job, but with practice they get better. i'm not looking for perfection, just good habits...and my 10 year old and 8 year old are incredible laundry folders as they have had a little bit longer practice. the rest of the week i am the one who folds all the laundry and they are responsible to take it to their drawers.

Tuesday- bathrooms- while the boys, who have been taught how to clean the bathroom, each are responsible for one part of the bathroom (ie toilet, tub, and sink...and that is on a rotating weekly schedule so not one kid gets stuck with the toilet every week) katie and i clean my bathroom. basically i just want her to be part of it and help and when we get to that point when she's a little older, she'll be rotated into cleaning the "kid's" bathroom as well.

Wednesday-floors, and dusting- one kid vacuums their room, the others dust and help me dust as well. i make sure my floors are all swept and mopped.

Thursday-organize- just like i challenged all of you to organize one area (large or small) we have tried to do this as a family. it's mainly for my kids during this summer because i just want them to get used to doing it on a regular basis. it will be more for me in the fall when i will tackle closets, and other places on a more regular schedule again.

Friday-mow lawns-
the older boys have started this this summer. our lawn looks like it gets a bad hair cut every week, but they are slowly improving. sigh.

now i have to ad this because i'm sure people will have the question of "how the hell do you get them to do it?"

i have one answer for you.

my kids revolted (especially the bathroom day) for a little while...but i didn't make them do it. instead of yelling, and getting after them, i would let them sluf off and when they would ask if they could play video games, asked to play with friends, or asked to go to the pool. i said "nope. not till your daily chore and every day stuff is done." oh you should of heard the wailing!

but after a few times, and with my consistency of "if these things get done...then you can do..." they may still huff and puff on certain days and say "ugh i hate mondays because i hate folding laundry..." to which i always answer "no kidding, you know folding laundry is my least favorite thing to do? but we have to do it in order to go to the pool right?" and that usually stops all grumbling.
and there you have it our morning routine/schedule...which opens up the rest of the day for us.

now do you want to win a $100 visa card? yeah i thought so. kelloggs and blogher has graciously asked me to post about our morning routine and give you the opportunity to enter and win!

1. so here's the deal leave me a comment saying whatever you like. you can agree with my routine, or you can add some of your pointers. or tell me your routine, or if you just want to say "hello i want $100 for free." that's fine too.

2.and a second opportunity can be had by tweeting, or facebooking about this giveaway. come back and leave me a second comment.

only two comments per email address please.
