this summer was the summer of staying home and not really going to far to have fun.
normally we go to san diego for a few weeks but with all the travel i and jake did right before summer we decided it would be best to save that till later on this year.
so here's my top 5 favorite summer activities:
5. reading time at the library. we have the cutest librarian who works extra hard in the summer time to make reading in the summer fun. the summer program ended with a magician. i had a blast. pretty sure my kids did too, but i was to enthralled and kept wondering how the heck he did it to care pay attention to see if my kids had fun.
4. family coming from california to visit us here in the middle of nowhere. no matter what it's hilarious to watch all your family that is used to living in sea level, come up to 7000+ feet above sea level. they kind of act a little drunk... or hard core smokers who run out of air fast. which kind of makes me think...i probably should look at running a 5 k in california, i'll probably kick some A!
3. swimming at grandma and grandpa's in the big city. cousins, cookouts, and no schedule...nuff said.
2. hiking and camping and spending time with the family. finally being able to say we had a successful camping and hiking experience!
1. and the #1 best summer activity this summer.
going to the pool every single freakin day. this summer i watched my 6 and almost 4 year old who neither would go into the water at the beginning of june...to having my almost 4 year old able to swim and float for hours with her floaties, and a 6 year old that learned how to swim, and get this jump off the high dive.
i got to talk to friends every day, and i got a rockin tan. best one i've had in years. not only that but i managed to jump off the high dive and managed to get the whole dang pool up my nose and into my brain. well okay maybe not the whole pool...but at least half.

We had a great week in Vermont with my husband's family.
ReplyDeleteUh, we didn't do anything particularly special this summer, but we did go to Belgium in April. We're in Texas, so April is hot just like the summer - that counts, right? :) cltrash at ymail dot com
ReplyDeleteWe visited my parents in St. Louis and went to CityGarden-- huge splash park with lovely wading pools for the kids. It was so beautiful-- large, sculptures all about-- and the kids had such a blast. It's going to the topp of our to do list in the summer with grandparents! Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI had two really great vacations with my husband and son. It was such a treat that my son was able to join us at Walt Disney World for a week and at the beach for a long weekend. He is a college student and works nights during the summer, thus I don't see him too much. So to have two vacations where he was there to spend time with and talk with was a true treat for me!
ReplyDeleteBest part of this summer was giving birth to baby boy #4!

ReplyDeleteWe took our kids to ride Cass Scenic Railroad and spent a very relaxing weekend at Snowshoe Mountain Resort in the mountains of our home state, WV. So beautiful, and a much-needed getaway in the middle of summer.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about the summer was just hanging out with my kids playing the in sprinkler in the backyard. Pure, simple joy!
ReplyDeleteThough most would think it was the trip with the family that would make me happy... it was actually a fairly common day at the beach... my daughter and son and I went out to our favorite restaurant at Cannery Row in Monterey then to a tiny little beach in Pacific Grove that we love to hang out on. The kids are teens and still don't mind spending time with me there. We found a hermit crab and my son got surprised by a wave and I haven't laughed so hard in a long time.

ReplyDeleteI don't have favorite "activities" but here are my five favorit ethings about this summer.

ReplyDeleteWe took my youngest to her freshman year at college, 1400 miles (give or take) away (NH to FL). Now that they are working and living all over, it is rare these days that we are all five together and I loved it.
ReplyDeleteMoving to a new place at the beginning of the summer made it a bit tough for big fun, but I think just blowing bubbles in the back yard with my boy are some of the best times.
ReplyDeleteVivian

My favorite thing this summer is a poignant and silly one for me. After homeschooling for 3 years we decided to enroll our son in a private school. I had to go have him fitted for uniforms early to insure they would be ready for fall. My little boy was not so little anymore. But the best part is that to celebrate this new adventure we stopped at 3 McDonald’s on the long drive home and got ice cream cones, each time! If you knew me you'd know this was shocking and he was shocked and thrilled all at the same time. He said, "Mom you're awaesome can we do this all the time." Noooooo! But I'll come up with something special for your next big adventure. My big boy is off to school and doing fine: )
ReplyDeletemy faves were two family weddings! Seeing my sisters-in-law become Mrs.'s was so wonderful.

ReplyDeleteWOW! This summer was the BEST! We did all sorts of things we haven't done before in the interest of saving money. It is amazing what you can find to do if you are forced to be creative - and how FUN it is!!1
ReplyDelete#5: Visiting the pool and watching those "chicken-airplane-zoom" moves learned in swim lessons.
#4: Making SMORES every week with our good friends next door in their front yard. They have one of those little portable fire pits. Amazing what chocolate and marshmallows will do for little ones' smiles - and hands, faces, hair, etc. The pictures are priceless.
#3: Planting and harvesting our garden! Who knew the best treasure hunt would involve finding the most ripe strawberries or peas that were ready for the snacking! Now, onto the tomatoes!!
#2: Cleaning and organizing our house - NOT as boring as it sounds - especially when you add Dad into the mix (lost his job) and music and auctions where kids get to spend their hard earned points on treats and special coupons for mom or dad time (with 5 including a new baby - this is coveted time)
#1: Taking a road trip (yes with 5 kids and a little financial help from those who love us) to California and Oregon to see cousins, play with chickens, go to a cabin and visit a grandma and grandpa we haven't been able to go and visit since they moved almost 7 years ago.
All in all - DANG fun - and my kids learned to do their chores to boot! This equals one happy mom!

Teaching my girls how to build a sand castle. There is just something about toes squishing in the sand and building the 'castle' of their dreams while listening to the waves crash on the shore. It's been several years since I've been to the beach and I. just. loved. sharing it with my girls!
ReplyDeleteThe best time I had this summer was spending it with my cousins. We told family stories and laughed.

I was so blissfully happy this summer hanging with my family for my sisters birthday up in big bear. I didn't even have enough time to stay, but only for an evening but I really tasted a piece of heaven that evening with my favorite people :)

ReplyDeleteThis summer I volunteered at Hanger Prosthetics to actively pursue my dream of creating limbs for people with limb loss. After years of feeling lost in my personal and professional life, I've now found where my passion lies! hlhonp at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteWe spent weeks with our grandson here...swimming in the lake, hiing, fishing, camping at a fire lookout, going to the water park, roasting hot dogs and making s'mores in our fire pit, painting, building a well house, and so much more!!

My summer is always happiest when my grandkids come to visit. I enjoy having them a week or so at a time and being able to have time to interact with them
ReplyDeleteHaving my grandkids come to visit is the best part of my summer
ReplyDeleteWe got out in nature as much as possible! We got Jenna (4) a pair of binoculars, and we went to parks, botanical gardens, forests, lakes, etc. She collected rocks, leaves, & pine cones everywhere we went, and we all collected memories.

My favorite summer activity was taking my little brother and his dog to the river. Wading and swimming and throwing sticks and sunning ourselves on the rocks!
